Angelina Eberly Society

Founded in 2002, the Angelina Eberly Society is a circle of individuals, families and local businesses who share our passion for preserving our community’s collective memory. Society members’ dedication to our mission is reflected by their financial commitment to the Association. The Angelina Eberly Society provides operational funds for the continued development and operation of the Association and its programming in support of the Austin History Center. Society members support the Association, and thus the Austin History Center, by contributing at one of the Angelina Eberly Society’s three levels: The Congress Avenue Circle ($1,000 per year for three years), The Moonlight Tower Circle ($5,000 per year for three years), and the 1839 Circle – commemorating the founding year of Austin ($18,390 per year for three years).

The society got its name from Angelina Eberly,an early Austin innkeeper who, when soldiers ordered by President Sam Houston attempted the furtive removal of the Republic of Texas’ archives from Austin, fired a cannon – thus alerting the Austin citizenry of the deed. The early Austinites quickly overcame Houston’s soldiers and returned the archives to Austin, which ensured that Austin would remain the capitol of the republic. This episode is known as the Archives War, and naming our giving society after Ms. Eberly is a fitting tribute to the continuing importance of protecting archives.

The Association encourages all our members and friends who truly believe in our mission to support the collection and preservation of our shared history, to seriously consider joining the Angelina Eberly Society. For more information on the Society, please contact Executive Director Sharmyn Lilly at 974-7499.

The Angelina Eberly Society has many events including an annual Angelina Eberly Luncheon hosted by the ACHA.
