UP AND DOWN THE AVENUE
2006 Audrey Bateman Randle Lecture **
The historic State Theatre on Congress Avenue was the site for the Austin History Center Association’s 2006 Audray Bateman Randle Lecture, Awards Presentation, Membership Meeting, and spring Waterloo Press Sale. Approximately 250 persons attended the Association events the evening of Monday, May 22nd. The Association is presenting a series of programs in 2006 celebrating the history of Congress Avenue, and the theme and new Waterloo Press items for sale that evening reflected that.
The lecture, titled “Up and Down the Avenue” was presented by *Ed Van De Vort, former AHC volunteer and staff member, former AHCA President, and the 2006 recipient of the AHCA’s Katherine Drake Hart History Preservation Award. Other awards presented that evening were the Austin History Center Volunteer of the Year Award to Al Bates and the Austin History Center Association Extraordinary Volunteer to John-Michael Cortez. Incoming president Chris Riley presented outgoing president Peter Flagg Maxson with a gift of appreciation.
New AHCA Waterloo Press items, comprising a new “Congress Avenue” line include the Association’s first T-shirt, sporting a full-color reproduction from an historic Congress Avenue postcard, new postcards and note cards of a black and white historic Congress Avenue scene.
